The shanty was a work song, designed to impart rhythm and to motivate sailors for the strenuous physical exertion required to sail the wind-driven packet and clipper ships of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Frampton Shantymen, on the other hand, have no tradition of seafaring and we strenuously avoid physical exertion. Also, only a couple of us can still remember the late nineteenth century. We discovered many years ago that shanty singing is a great way to get a crowd of people singing along, and we’ve been doing that ever since: in pubs, at festivals, weddings, private functions and even school workshops. And in the process, we’ve raised many thousands for charity.Shanties, sea songs, non-sea songs: if it’s fun to listen to, fun to sing along with and we can squeeze in some interesting harmonies then we’ll sing it.
